Blackbird Eggshell 3D Scan

Blackbird Eggshell 3D Scan
As I was exploring the forest in the spring, I came across a broken blackbird eggshell that had been left behind by a blackbird hatchling. It was a beautiful sight, with delicate patterns and colors that contrasted with the greenery around it. Naturally as a nature loving guy, I wanted to preserve its intricate shape and colors.
To do so, I used photogrammetry along with the Dark Void Technique. This technique requires taking a series of photos of an object from various angles in a dark setting along with cross polarization. As a result, the eggshell on the photos will look like it is floating in a dark void, with (most) shadows and reflections removed. This way the photogrammetry software cannot get confused by background elements or reflections. Thus it outputs a higher resolution model and textures.
To make this model, I took 175 photos of the blackbird eggshell using a tripod and a remote shutter. I also used a polarizing filter on my camera lens and a polarizing film on my flash to achieve cross polarization. However, I had to be careful with the eggshell as it was quite fragile. If the eggshell broke or slightly cracked, the entire dataset was useless.
To get a good model, I made sure to cover every angle and detail of the eggshell, rotating it carefully on a small turntable. Then I used Agisoft Metashape to have it create a 3D model of the eggshell along with 8K textures.
The model is simply decimated from 2 million faces to about 250K faces. Any missing textures were eye balled with Affinity Photo and Blender. As a bonus, this model is free to use!
